Frank Smith is a band. Led by Aaron Sinclair, a Boston resident until 2007, the now-local sextet just issued its third disc, Before You Were Born. It's a radical shift from the hazy rootsiness of its past to a rich amalgam of indie and classic rock styles. The title track even possesses a masterful Bob Seger rip, while the rest maintains Sinclair's lustrous, yet gloomy vision.

On last January's The One ... Cohesive, G-Side preached Southern-fried street gospel in a dreamy haze best typified by "How Far," a track on which rappers Clova and ST sampled Beach House and brought dream pop to hip-hop. Island, December's welcome follow-up, bangs harder from the tip with verbal assaults "Cinematic" and "Atmosphere," but there's still a sense that the Huntsville, Ala., duo has its heads in the clouds. Or maybe that's just the work of in-house production crew Block Beattaz, which cut beats that fan out like the exhaust on Andre 3000's Cadillac.

Essentially the second-in-command of Kendrick Lamar's rising Black Hippy rap collective, the German-born, L.A.-based MC ScHoolboy Q has an exquisite ear for beats. Woozy, tethered drums and smoke-damaged synths mix together in a pitch-black blur. The smoothness of breakout second album Habits & Contradictions is undeniable
Smoke and Feathers began in Austin, TX with the meeting of Hunter Cahalan and Josh Terry in late 2007, both possessing unique singing and guitar techniques. Josh's heavy southern stylings and Hunter's eery psychedelic pulses merged into a unique blend of rock and roll which could ultimately be described as psychedelic southern rock. Local bassist Alan Houston met the pair in mid 2008 bringing a deep low end into the mix. Soon after, the group picked up Geoff Guillard, a friend of Josh and Hunter from the downtown scene. Geoff brought intense beats with tastefully intricate rhythms to the already booming sound of Smoke and Feathers.

First up, January's Subject: Matter EP, a six-song sampling of the happy marriage between Sandman's complex schemes – "Sweet Emotion (Orchard Beach)," "Soap" – and Stones Throw's retro-soul sheen.

"Last time we got pulled over on tour, the cop asked what kind of band we were," says Not in the Face's singer/guitarist Jonathan Terrell from behind the wheel of the duo's diesel van. "We said, 'We're a country band' and he let us go."
From the locals' tour playlists – Gary Stewart, Alabama, and when in east Texas, 104.1FM the Ranch – you'd believe they are. In the backseat, the tattoo of Wes Cargal's drumsticks on a practice pad underscores John Anderson's 1991 hit "Straight Tequila Night." He's disciplined and meticulous, the kind of guy who practices on the way to the show and compares his drum style to "putting on a 15-year-old pair of Levi's." Big white vans are familiar territory for Cargal, who grew up touring the motocross circuit and previously hit the road with rockers White Rhino.
Tonight, they're at Fast Freddy's, a dump of a pool hall in Longview, right around where Terrell and Cargal grew up. The hometown crowd watches the pair detonate a possessed version of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You" and goes crazy for explosive original fare like "Downtown Girl," which showcases Terrell's soulful and textured singing. The unhinged abandon emanating from the twosome is purely emotional. Terrell's six-string work, while frenetic, is no thrash job but rather a thing of precision and carefully cultivated taste. Cargal looks like Mitch Mitchell: a whirlwind of fills and build-ups, bringing the jam to complex heights and dropping it into a swinging, swaggering pocket of rock & roll thunder.
Heading home afterward, the familiar sounds of Tom Petty's Greatest Hits fill the van, and Terrell's classic rock sensibilities reveal themselves.
"I think people are moving away from playing an instrument," he says. "They just go home and write a bunch of shitty beats on the computer. I think it's rude to every band that's out there playing the bass and playing the drums."
Cargal concurs: "It's sterile. There's no soul in it anymore. That's a big thing to us. We play hard, with soul, and push the boundaries of what we can do as a twopiece."

Cleverly conjoining more traditional Mexican music with the relentless speed and guitar-powered onslaught of punk rock, this San Antonio band makes cowpunk from the other side of the fence. Smart and dynamic in the same stead as Mariachi El Bronx, Piñata Protest respects both forms enough that even purists will find something to love here.

Besides fruit, a strawberry can be a red bruise on the skin. It's an apt description for what Wussy does. The Cincinnati quartet's brand of punk is raucous, melodic, and leaves a mark. Strawberry's more electronic than previous output – check out the fuzz on "Asteroid" – but there's a taut stateliness to what Wussy does, recalling the Mekons. Chuck Cleaver of Nineties wiseacres the Ass Ponys matches his Jon Langford to Lisa Walker's Sally Timms blow for blow. Wussy's magic is the rage behind "Fly Fly Fly" and ominous undercurrents of "Little Miami," pulsing at different tempos but striking with equal force.

Kristine Levine, Eugene Mirman, Henry Owings of Chunklet, Jack Vaughn of Comedy Central Records, and moderator Julie Seabaugh share road stories.

In a world where bands teem like bacteria, how does anyone tap into the real goods? You look to digital musicologists. They're behind a large portion of the music content on the Web. Suggestions you see on music sites ("If you like Van Halen, here are five other bands you may enjoy") aren't just computer-code magic. That's actually the work of music writers.
"Music is something that is used socially," says Chuck Eddy, celebrated music critic, new Austinite as of last year, and current musicologist for Rhapsody. "Humans have a much wider scope of knowledge than computers, and digital musicologists are providing a service. I find it kind of exciting that if I plug in albums, the next day someone clicks on something I put in there and discovers new music."
The job entails a lot of different content creation, explains Eddy, "general metadata." Metadata?
"Metadata is hard to define, but in this context, it includes band bios, album reviews, popular tracks, and similar artists. When I write, 'This band is similar to these other 10 bands,' the similarities might be artists they influence or related projects, some form of overlap," says Eddy. "Again, the idea of a digital musicologist is that people benefit from having an actual human being guide them to music they might like. This isn't some mathematical algorithm. You have to put bands in a context. Another part of metadata is placing artists in subgenres and even sub-subgenres. It takes human beings to do that."
How does this affect the climate of music writing?
"The definition of what I do as a freelance music critic has expanded in so many directions," muses Eddy. "Until a couple years ago, I was just a writer or an editor. Sometimes I miss writing 4,000-word reviews, but I have the short pieces down to an art form. It's almost like writing a haiku. How much information and opinion can you pack into 600 characters? I like figuring things out – like where does country rap come from? Making connections is always what I've done."

Told that he can do whatever he wants except make fun of the Sheik, who rules the country and finances the Biennial, Zahedi decides to do just that. He turns his camera on the Biennial itself and gleefully presses every culturally sensitive button he can find. But his court jester antics fail to amuse. Zahedi's film is banned for blasphemy and he is threatened with a fatwa.

Presented by Louisville, Kentucky’s Forecastle Festival, the six-hour long event will feature eight bands playing two stages, with the mighty Cloud Nothings and Titus Andronicus serving as headliners.
That’s not all though. CoSigns will also serve as the kickoff party for our long-awaited mobile app. Attendees of the party will be receive free access to all the app’s premium features for 30 days, as well as a have a chance to win an exclusive giveaway.
In addition, we’ll be exploring the 10th Anniversary of Forecastle at CoSigns along with exclusive promotions and ticket giveaways. This year’s festival, set for July 13-15th in Louisville, will feature My Morning Jacket as both headliner and curator.

Hipsters, tall bikes, clown schools, and endless PBR flowing in every home kegerator. Aptly named The Portland Party, the all-day concert will feature over 20 bands from Rain City, and even sweetens the deal with free beer, coffee, and liquor!
Local Portland breweries will be sending down kegs to provide two “Power Hours” of free beer, proving once and for all that despite recent allegations from Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, the people of the Pacific Northwest will likely choose to “put a beer on it” over a bird. The two Power Hours will take place at Noon and 6:00pm. In addition, The Portland Party will be giving away free Stumptown Coffee (morning Power Hour) and 360 Vodka (evening Power Hour).
An intersection of Portland’s art and culture, the party is presented by a wide variety of Portland organizations, including Tender Loving Empire, A to Z Media, Octopus Entertainment, Marmoset Music, and Eleven Magazine. The Portland Party is also sponsored by an array of music, media and tasty allies, including Tixie, GoPro, Travel Portland, Deschutes Brewing, Stumptown Coffee, Voodoo Doughnut, 360 Vodka, and more!
So bust out your fixie, put on your finest non-prescription glasses and skinny jeans, and come out ready to dance, drink and party like it’s the 1990’s – Portland style.

"I did 48 Tonight Shows. I remember six."
That's pretty exceptional, even by a drunk's standard. And Paul Williams was certainly that.
Strange as it might seem now, Williams was also once borderline omnipresent in Hollywood. Not only did the diminutive entertainer appear in everything from Smokey and the Bandit to the Planet of the Apes franchise, but he was also the songwriter behind such monumental soft rock classics as "We've Only Just Begun" (the Carpenters) and "Evergreen" (Barbra Streisand). He wrote the lyrics to The Love Boat theme and appeared in multiple episodes as a passenger on the Pacific Princess. He has a star on Hollywood Boulevard and an Oscar nomination for penning The Muppet Movie anthem "The Rainbow Connection." He also loved drugs and alcohol.
"In the Seventies, I was doing work I was really proud of, but somewhere I crossed the line from use to abuse to addiction," says Williams. "Twin addictions were running on parallel tracks with me: One was drugs and alcohol and the other was addiction to celebrity. I became better at showing off than showing up. The next thing you know, you've gone from being the center of attention to peeking out the venetian blinds at 3am looking for the tree police because you know they're out there and you haven't slept for two days and nights."
Williams, sober for 22 years this March, is now the subject of the documentary Paul Williams: Still Alive. And while not the chart fixture of the past, the songwriter was paid an enormous compliment by his peers in 2009 when they elected him president of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Despite the potential political aspects of that position, Williams is and always will be a songwriter first. He's got the scars to prove it.
"The reason you respond to something is because of what we have in common – our fears, our triumphs, and this full range of human emotion," he opines. "All this shit we write about, we all go through. If you're spectacularly brilliant and different from the rest of the world it makes it a tougher communication than if you're Paulie and you go, 'Ouch, mommy. I need to be held today.' Someone else out there is going, 'I need to be held today, too.'"
