My name is Cary Baker and I operate the music publicity company Conqueroo -- proud co-sponsor of the SCHED* SXSW schedule. I have worked in the music PR field for 30 years and am proud to say that Conqueroo is a no-compromise company: I have to feel passionate about every artist we represent. When I am passionate about music, great things have a way of happening.
Since Conqueroo opened its doors in April 2004, we have represented some outstanding artists and labels: Blues Traveler, J.J. Cale, John Cale, Ruthie Foster, Marshall Crenshaw, Rodney Crowell, Thomas Dolby, Robert Cray, Rodney Crowell, The dB’s, Kinky Friedman, Hank III, Peter Himmelman, Holly Golightly, Keb' Mo', Robert Earl Keen, Sonny Landreth, Raul Malo, Eleni Mandell, James McMurtry, Willie Nile, Vernon Reid, Stan Ridgway, Martin Sexton, Billy Joe Shaver, Michelle Shocked, Otis Taylor, Mitch Ryder, Stax Records and Trombone Shorty – to name a few.
Before I launched Conqueroo, I worked as head of publicity at Capitol Records, I.R.S. Records, Discovery Records and Morgan Creek Records. Over the years, I have spearheaded publicity campaigns for R.E.M., The Finn Brothers, Bonnie Raitt, Shelby Lynne, Delbert McClinton, Cheap Trick, Loudon Wainwright III, Alex Chilton, Susan Tedeschi, Tina Turner, the Beastie Boys, Concrete Blonde and more.
Prior to becoming a publicist, I worked as a music journalist for publications such as the Chicago Reader, Creem and Trouser Press. I have been a voting member of the Recording Academy (NARAS) since 1979 and a former Governor. I have served on the Board of Directors of the Americana Music Association, and on the Music Industry Committee of City of Hope.
2012 will mark my 25th consecutive SXSW -- scary but true. We offer our clients conference maximization as well as traditional publicity and new media marketing.
I look forward to seeing you there!
