Iranian Outlaws: Satire vs. Censorship

Saman Arbabi will use his signature wit to relate how the satirical TV program challenges the oppressive Iranian regime all the while influencing the direction of the country’s political landscape. The program, “Parazit,” has become a runaway hit in Iran despite the gov’s strict censorship practices. The program uses alternate channels of distribution to reach their audience which has driven the program further underground and contributed to its outlaw status and popularity. The show has so completely seeped into the Iranian psyche that the president and his supporters have launched a counter-Parazit program. Saman will give insight into their innovative methods of growing an audience that was previously all but unreachable. At SXSW, he will unveil his latest: "Weapons of Mouse Destruction," the largest global art project against government Internet censorship. Raina Kumra BBG Director of Innovation will open the session with an overview of closed media environments around the world.

Rhapsody to Year 0: Music & Publishing Go Digital
With book sales going digital much faster than music sales did, why is the publishing industry growing, and not imploding? How threatened are publishers & labels as content creators start developing audiences directly through iTunes and Kindles? What does this mean for independent writers & musicians? And do our deranged copyright laws benefit anyone but profiteering lawyers? Rob Reid’s talk will compare the online challenges faced by publishing vs. music. Rob founded Listen.com, which created Rhapsody – the first digital music service fully licensed by every major label. Rhapsody remains one of the largest online music services, and is owned by MTV and RealNetworks. Now an author, Rob’s in the thick of another industry’s digital transformation. Rob’s book Year Zero (published by Random House this July) addresses some of these issues. In it, aliens seek to erase the ruinous fines on their vast collections of pirated American music by destroying the Earth. Parts of it are made up.

The Systematic Undoing of Copyright Trolls
Lawyers who file mass copyright suits against defenseless persons who copied from copyrighted text for the most innocent of reasons, such as to disclose an illicit practice, or to criticize or endorse an idea, are called copyright trolls. It is purely a profit-making venture. They count on the considerable cost of a legal defense, and the statutory maximum of $150,000, to extort thousands of dollars in settlement from each of their victims. Their aggregate demands in some cases have exceeded a billion dollars.
The most effective means of dealing with copyright trolls is to treat them like vermin. For example, because these cases are filed in volume, there is little attention to detail, and misstatements are frequent. These misstatements may occur in statutory representations under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, or in sworn affidavits. They are perjurious, and the troll and/or his client can accurately be characterized as a perjuror to the Federal District Court. Attorney.
This program will discuss tactics for dealing with copyright trolls, and available defenses to their attacks.

The Not So Allied Forces of Social TV Comedy
The US and UK have joined forces enough over the years, so with tweet-powered comedy, we Brits are going it alone. Sorry Team CoCo and Fallon. This talk’s all about what’s happening in the Mother Country when Twitter and Facebook fuel the funny on the telly. Why listen to us? From Monty Python to The Office, the BBC produces more comedy than any broadcaster in the world. But the web changed everything. What happens when Auntie Beeb focuses on developing new comedy talent from the web up? Or when it teams with social TV consultants like Urgent Genius to make immersive second-screen experiences? The keys to the next generation of Britcom are in the hands of TV viewers tapping on iPads. But what kind of TV comedy will that create? Hecklers, come one, come all. Sit in the front row and let us pick on you as we tell you about some experiments we've been doing with live comedy and social media including a live Twitter-powered experiment just for SXSW.

Music Discovery: Man vs. Machine
Spotify, Pandora, MOG, Aweditorium and many more aim to provide the ultimate experience in music discovery -- they claim to have the "winning strategy" with their unique combination of an extensive catalog, social media integration, and algorithms. But what about the human element in music discovery? Not just your friend who tells you what’s cool -- which is cool -- but real DJs, with a passion for music and the evolution of an artist. What about websites and blogs like Pitchfork and Stereogum -- humans who write about music and even present the music they write about? In the age of machines, is the human dead? Is there still a need for the knowledgeable, passionate, quirky but unpredictable human? Are hybrid models like We Are Hunted and WahWah.fm the future? In "Man vs. Machine for Music Discovery" KCRW, the noted station in Los Angeles, CA will convene a diverse panel to discuss their potential for success and what they might portend for the future of man vs. machine.

Can Printed Electronics Save the Music Industry?

12:30pm

Can Social Music Save the Music Industry?
Can making the musical experience more social and shareable help the music industry survive? The degree to which any new digital music company will be successful will be based on their ability to engage people. Music is a social construct, and while people still sit at home listening to music alone, they are more likely to share their music experiences if given the tools.
The cloud has enabled people to do much more with music from interacting with the art, songs, and ephemera around their music, to being able to create their own content and layers around their music discoveries.
Will rich social functions - discovery, visualization, playlists, interactivity, maybe even game aspects, coupled with ease of use around multiple connected devices (i.e., go seamlessly from computer to phone to car to living room), find enough success to save the music industry?
This panel will investigate the different social and interactivity tools the music industry can use to add to their bottom line.

Beyond Dance Dance Revolution

Throughout the last decade, Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) swept the globe, heralding a new craze for dance & gaming experiences. But as with many dance games, the harder it gets (as players advance through levels), the less movement is used (as players conserve stamina to score points). Can we bring the dance back into dance games? Can we hijack this genre to deliver game experiences that encourage users to ‘freestyle’? Can we use new robotic technologies, sound engineering, rigorous quantum mechanics & motion capture to do it?
This panel will focus on two new projects: quantum mechanics based ‘Danceroom Spectroscopy’ & the motion sensor based ‘Guerilla Dance Project’. Using art, science & game mechanics, these projects encourage collective action & harness our fascination with social play. And unlike DDR, the more artistically users interact, the more rewarding the results, regardless of age or fitness levels. Watch older people outplay teenagers. It’s a totally different experience of dance & game play. The panel will discuss the development process, the hurdles (including how to make artists understand quantum mechanics), the vision of these projects, & what they reveal in terms of gestural experience & game design.
Chaired by Choreographer Laura Kriefman the panel will explore the practices of David Glowacki, chemical physicist; Joseph Hyde, composer; Matthew Bickerton, Digital technologist; & Victoria Tillotson, Producer at Pervasive Media Studio, Bristol.

A Conversation with Steve Stoute and Dan Charnas

    From the Austin Chronicle:

"Don't say multicultural," Russell Simmons once told journalist Dan Charnas. "Say multiracial. It's one culture."

Simmons is partially responsible for the latter point being more true today than it's ever been. As the founder of pioneering hip-hop label Def Jam Recordings, he played an integral role in black music crossing over into mainstream culture. Think the Beastie Boys, Run-DMC remixing Aerosmith's "Walk This Way," or LL Cool J's premiere on MTV.

Dan Charnas reported on all of it for The Source, the first major-market magazine to exclusively cover hip-hop. Last year, he published the mind-bendingly detailed The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop, a 672-page analysis of every rap deal that made America the colorful society it is today. He knows a thing or two about the power of the crossover.

"When I talk about crossover, I'm not talking about mixing it up, which is what guys like Nelly and Snoop did," he says, referring to Nelly's 2006 collaboration with country hit-factory Tim McGraw and Snoop Dogg's 2008 blues choker "My Medicine." "I'm talking about a system of white supremacy whereby a black artist, in order to get any mainstream exposure, has to change their musical style or whiten up their music. Nelly was already a pop star when he made that song. Snoop was huge before he made 'My Medicine.'"

Charnas references Michael Jackson putting Eddie Van Halen on "Beat It" and Lionel Richie's "Deep River Woman" collaboration with Alabama as prime examples of pointed crossover, moments when a black artist made the conscious decision to fall in with a white market. When Barack Obama was elected president, Charnas knew the end of music's racial divide was at hand.

"Obama represents the beginning of what you might call the final conflict against white supremacy," he says. "There's no question in my mind that the 21st century, for black artists, is a much more equitable playing field than it ever was in the Seventies and Eighties."
