    Wednesday March 14, 2012 7:30pm - 8:10pm @ Dirty Dog Bar (505 E 6th St., Austin, TX 78701)
ZOROASTER’s heady mix of mammoth metal and psychotropic shoegaze has seen the trio hailed as "one of the U.S.'s most promising metal bands" and it has receiving shining praise for its explosive power, intriguing mysticism and unique take on heavy music. Summoned by the mighty sludge of The Melvins, the mysticism of Celtic Frost and the nihilistic blues of Black Sabbath, ZOROASTER formed in 2003 out of “the need for sedation by high volumes and low frequencies". The band immediately began creating devastating, dirge-ridden doom that erupted into heavyweight grooves and transcendental musical atmospheres. ZOROASTER's early sound was compared to "having 10,000 ton granite slabs dropped on your head from a height of several miles".

Rwake
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 9:30pm - 10:10pm @ Dirty Dog Bar (505 E 6th St., Austin, TX 78701)

"The way of the South" has resonated through southern music for generations and "the way" it seems, for southern metal bands is often raw, to-the-point, unfiltered expression; unflinching delivery oozing with conviction. The southern bands just mean it a bit more. And in that tradition, like EYEHATEGOD and BUZZOV*EN before them, RWAKE f**king "mean it" and don't care what you think. Just over ten years ago RWAKE started out as a four brothers jamming to kill time, 'cause in Arkansas that's all you have...time. And in time those brothers were joined by other brothers (and a sister) and recorded some tracks of their first material. A real, first demo, Xenoglossalgia: The Last Stage of Awareness, followed shortly as well as a slew of shows throughout the deep south, including their first ventures outside their home state of Arkansas. RWAKE recorded their first full-length album with TODAY IS THE DAY's Steve Austin. For reasons buried by the sands of time, the record never saw a proper release and was mostly distributed by the band while on tour via hand-scrawled CD-R's. RWAKE spent the next few years stringing together shows throughout the Eastern US, developing their overwhelming, cathartic live performances in sweltering warehouses, stuffy basements, and any backwoods DIY show (indoors or out) that would have them. By 2002, RWAKE recorded what would become their first properly released full-length, Hell Is The Door To The Sun. Hell Is The Door... was the sound of a band with a purpose. Less a record than an hour-long summoning of personal demons and primal fury, Hell Is the Door, put RWAKE firmly on the radar of heavy music connoisseurs. ALABAMA THUNDERPUSSY took the band on its first proper North American tour in support of Hell Is The Door?and gave RWAKE a platform to expose its ugliness for all to see. Two years of writing and touring culminate in 2004 with RWAKE entering Volume Studios (PELICAN, MINSK, UNEARTHLY TRANCE) with long-time friend Sanford Parker of MINSK to record the full-length album If You Walk Before You Crawl You Crawl Before You Die.You Walk was released via At A Loss Records and full on bled the sonic hostility the band had become know for. The band hit the road extensively again; including a run with WEEDEATER and spots shows with the likes of MASTODON, HIGH ON FIRE, The HIDDEN HAND, MEATJACK, and many more over the years. In January 06, RWAKE signed with Relapse and that spring made their first appearance as a label artist at the heralded SXSW Music Festival. In one of the most talked-about sets of SXSW 06 RWAKE aired out a host of new material that left a trail of slack jaws and blown minds in its wake. Just a few short months later and the band was back in Parker's Volume Studios to lay that material to tape in the shape of it? new record Voices of Omens. Voices of Omens hits below the bible-belt with thick, tar-black riffing, vicious male/female howls and leads so sweet you'd think they're from Georgia. Instead this Arkansas band represents their dirty south with their intensely unique style of acid-drenched metal. Voices of Omens is a hostile explosion of hideously impure American metal which emanates an eerie and unsettling vibe; haunting in atmosphere and hallucinogenic in it's effect on the listener. Voices of Omens is set for a February 2007 international release date. RWAKE will hit the road in April with long-time friends MINSK for an Eastern US tour before beginning an extensive Voices of Omens world tour throughout 2007 and 2008.

Black Cobra
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 11:30pm - 12:10am @ Dirty Dog Bar (505 E 6th St., Austin, TX 78701)
Formed by drummer Rafa Martinez (ex-16, ex-Acid King) and guitarist/vocalist Jason Landrian (ex-Cavity), BLACK COBRA catapulted themselves onto the scene in 2001 with their ravenous, upbeat and ultimately unique style of punk/hardcore-fueled sludge metal. They were picked up almost immediately by indie At A Loss Recordings becoming the band's label home for the release of their debut full-length, Bestial, and follow-up album, Feather And Stone. By 2009, with the band then virtually a household name to the tens of thousands of fans who've seen their flooring live performances over the years, BLACK COBRA signed with juggernaut Southern Lord Recordings for the release of Chronomega, the band's most diverse material to date.
For the recording of this, the band's second release for Southern Lord Recordings, BLACK COBRA recently ventured across the continent to pound out their anticipated new album, the follow-up to 2009's massively well-received Chronomega. This time around the outfit enlisted the talents of Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou and his God City Studio in Salem, Massachusetts. After a brutal week-and-a-half in the notorious lair, 'COBRA hammered out what will soon be known to the world as their almighty fourth full-length album, "Invernal". This is BLACK COBRA's most honed and diversified material to date, and will definitely tear your face off completely. By the time you read this Black Cobra will have already decimated the fiends at the Power of the Riff Fest that their label put on in August. They also showcased songs from this album at the Music Fest Northwest festival in Portland and supporting High on Fire in Oakland. A rigorous amount of touring will continually be announced through the rest of 2012.

Motionless In White
    Thursday March 15, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ Dirty Dog Bar (505 E 6th St., Austin, TX 78701)

A new breed of dark rockers is subtly taking over, stealing the hearts of a dedicated legion of fans, with a blend of intense melodic metal and a penchant for the macabre. Already fan favorites in the scene, Pennsylvania sextet Motionless In White is set to rise to the front of the pack.

The tale of Motionless In White’s conception begins in 2005. Forming in Scranton, Penn. while still in high school, six friends – singer Chris “Motionless” Cerulli, guitarist/vocalist TJ Bell, guitarist Ryan Sitkowski, bassist Frank Polumbo, keyboardist Josh Balz, and drummer Angelo Parente - joined forces and got their start playing popular rock cover songs. By 2006, they had developed their own sound, blending heavier, darker elements into melodic tracks, and gaining inspiration from the likes of The Misfits, Nine Inch Nails, Bleeding Through, Cradle Of Filth and Marilyn Manson to form Motionless In White. With the release of debut EP The Whorror and two summers of wowing crowds with their high-octane show on dates of Vans Warped Tour, the band gained the attention of both independent and major record labels, including Fearless Records. The band signed to Fearless in December 2008, and set about recording their acclaimed second EP When Love Met Destruction, which was released in spring 2009.

Skindred
    Friday March 16, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ Dirty Dog Bar (505 E 6th St., Austin, TX 78701)
What exactly is it about Skindred that makes them so unique, so unto themselves both musically and spiritually? Is it their origins on the mean streets of Newport, Wales? Is it their dancehall roots? Is it their punk, DIY ethic? Drum and bass combined with metallic riffing? Anyone who has experienced this band can go on for days trying to encapsulate what exactly it is about Skindred, but it is quite simply the music created by these 4 unlikely bandmates - Daniel Pugsley, Michael Fry, Arya Goggin and Benji Webbe – which blends a clash of cultures and ideas into a fusion of such musical grandeur, such magnificence that all bow or break in its wake.

Since they formed in 2009, Westfield, New Jersey’s the Static Jacks (lead vocalist Ian Devaney, guitarists Henry Kaye and Michael Sue-Poi, and drummer Nick Brennan) have earnestly burned their own path through indie rock’s crowded field. Ignoring music’s fickle trends, the Jacks have forged a unique blend of punk, garage, and soul sounds for a sonic punch to the gut and heart. The band’s self-released Laces EP (2009), a riley glimpse at fleeting youth, saw the group hit its stride. This was bolstered by several tours with various indie notables including the Futureheads, Biffy Clyro, Young the Giant, and We Were Promised Jetpacks. Throughout, the Static Jacks held fast to a D.I.Y. and collective ethos, writing songs in full collaboration, designing their album and T-shirt art-and they became a band of brothers, well beyond friends making music.

Go Radio
    Friday March 16, 2012 11:00pm - 11:40pm @ Dirty Dog Bar (505 E 6th St., Austin, TX 78701)

It’s a truly rare occasion when a debut by a band is met with the kind of feverish fan anticipation that has encircled LUCKY STREET, the full-length debut by Tallahassee, Florida melodic rockers GO RADIO. But then again, none of those other groups have JASON LANCASTER at the helm.

The GO RADIO singer/songwriter, who’s been crafting unflinchingly honest, breathtakingly beautiful music since venturing out on his own in 2007, boasts arguably the most goosebump-inducing combination of raw vocal talent and songwriting prowess in rock today. Backed by a gifted band with two stellar EPs under their belts, LANCASTER and GO RADIO are only just beginning to explore the seemingly endless potential for their mind-blowing creations.

The band--which also includes bassist MATT “BURNS” POULOS, drummer STEVEN KOPACZ and guitarist ALEX REED--immediately turned heads with the release of their self-released EP Welcome To Life in 2008, which bowled over listeners with its poignant, heartfelt lyrics and irresistible melodies. Attracting the attention of Fearless Records, the band inked a deal with the label, releasing the band’s second EP, Do Overs And Second Chances, in 2010. The EP, which featured the stunning ballad “Goodnight Moon,” landed at #8 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, going on to sell more than 15,000 copies in the U.S. In that span the group has toured extensively, heading out on high-profile runs with A Day To Remember, Secondhand Serenade and the Fearless Friends Tour with Mayday Parade among others. Despite the early success, 2011 promises to be the band’s most pivotal moment to date.

Tapping the legendary Tim O’Heir (The All-American Rejects, Hot Rod Circuit, The Starting Line, Say Anything) to man the console for LUCKY STREET, the 13 tracks showcases the producer’s knack for crafting inherently addicting ear candy. The production, and the awe-inspiring musicianship underpinning the songs, serves as an unmatched springboard for LANCASTER’s impassioned writing, which he says has taken on even greater personal and philosophical significance this time around.

“This record spans the last four years of my life. It’s really about growing up,” says LANCASTER. “I'm 27 years old now, and I've written so many songs about girls, so we collected ourselves to talk about bigger things in life that are important to everyone. There are songs on LUCKY STREET about religion, lack of religion, lack of faith, birth and death. It's really a wide spectrum of topics.”

One of the album’s sheer epiphanies comes at the outset, with the epic title track “Lucky Street.” Over a dense cloud of swirling overdriven guitars and pulsing rhythms, LANCASTER shares a surreal, apocalyptic vision on a Manhattan street, where in the face of imminent destruction the true questions of life, death and regret demand answering. Although the song was written a year ago, the band believes that only now can such a sweeping work be given proper treatment.

“It's about a dream I had: I was in New York City, on LUCKY STREET, watching the end of the world. It was such a vivid, colorful dream that I got up the next morning and wrote the story, and when we got home from tour and I started looking back on it, I wrote the song,” shares LANCASTER. “We all felt like the end of the world was kind of a heavy topic for our band at the time, so we decided to shelve it. We weren't ready to give it justice, so we wanted to wait until we really could.”
Mortality is not an unknown theme in GO RADIO’s music--the passing of LANCASTER’s father in August 2007 has inspired some of his most heart-rending compositions. But on LUCKY STREET the songwriter expands his scope on the subject with brilliant results, as on “Singing With The King,” which even goes on in its second verse to compile an “all-star band” in heaven complete with friends, family and long-lost legends Elvis, Johnny Cash, Keith Moon and Freddie Mercury. “It's about being okay with dying--just realizing that we're here, and if I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die,” says LANCASTER. “But if I'm going to be here, I might as well live like it's the last day. A lot of people say that, but it really is about the realization that you have to do that. We thought less of it as a morbid theme, and embraced the song as more of an anthem.”

Fans will also recognize a re-recorded version of “Forever My Father,” the tearful ballad that closed the Welcome To Life EP. Originally penned and recorded along with LANCASTER’s siblings Erin and Daniel shortly after their father’s passing, it’s one of the most personal, emotionally vulnerable works ever recorded in popular music.

“After my dad passed, my brother, sister and I were at the viewing after everyone left, in this funeral home. My dad was in the middle of the room and pianos were on either side of him; my sister's an amazing pianist, and all three of us sing, so she sat down at one piano, and I sat down at the other. We started playing back and forth, and it just felt right,” says LANCASTER. “He was a musician as well, so it was like all of us were there, together.” It’s essential that the original version of “Forever My Father” with Jason’s sister Erin and brother Daniel appeared on LUCKY STREET.

Inspired by the moment and desiring to leave a copy of the song with his father before his burial, LANCASTER enlisted a friend with a recording studio to help track the composition immediately, resulting in the stirring performance heard on Welcome To Life. Approaching the song again for LUCKY STREET, LANCASTER says GO RADIO attempted to focus on the heart of the composition, instead of bogging the meaning down in heavy production gloss and arrangements.

“It was an emotional song and an emotional experience, and I feel like that came through on the first recording, but we wanted to try and make sure it was there on the second one as well,” says LANCASTER. “It was about trying to keep it down and keep it to the essentials, so the piano's still driving it, and it's all about the emotion in the song as opposed to the instrumentation.” It’s this kind of passion and dedication to the music that makes GO RADIO, and LUCKY STREET, so welcome in modern music.

Known for their kinetic live performances and intimate interaction with fans, a packed slate of touring in support of LUCKY STREET--including a full run on the 2011 Vans Warped Tour--is the other crucial ingredient in bringing such vital art to the masses. GO RADIO aim to recruit a bonafide army of listeners, from multiple genres, as diverse as the band’s inimitable sound.

“We constantly put ourselves out there. Any chance we get to reach a new audience and get new ears, we're down for. We're not going to say, 'Because you like breakdowns, you're not gonna like GO RADIO,' because you might,” says LANCASTER. “That's how you build these things--one fan at a time, brick by brick. If it weren't for everybody latching onto the band and finding something they enjoy about it, I'd still be playing acoustic guitar in my den right now.”

GO RADIO’s new album LUCKY STREET is out now on Fearless Records.

    Sunday March 18, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ Dirty Dog Bar (505 E 6th St., Austin, TX 78701)
Braid was an influential emo/post-hardcore band from Illinois that formed in 1993. After forming, the band went through several line-up changes but eventually settled on: Bob Nanna on guitar/vocals, Todd Bell on bass, Chris Broach on guitar/vocals and, Roy Ewing on drums. Roy was replaced in 1997 by Damon Atkinson. In 1999 Braid disbanded and went on to form Hey Mercedes with all band members minus Chris Broach (who went on to form The Firebird Band) and adding Mark Dawsurk. The band reformed for a comprehensive US/Canada tour from June-August 2004 & a brief Japanese tour in August 2004. In 2010 the band decided to get back into the studio with old friend & famous music producer J Robbins to record a new EP titled "Closer To Closed". In support of this release, the band played a memorable show at their old stomping grounds The Metro in Chicago followed by shows in Champaign, IL & Milwaukee, WI. More shows and talks of more music to come from Braid in 2012.
