G-Side
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:30pm - 9:15pm @ Lustre Pearl (97 Rainey St. Austin, Austin, TX 78701)
Huntsville, Alabama's G-Side are ushering in a new era of Southern rap. Two of the hardest-grinding MCs in the business, ST 2 Lettaz and Yung Clova witnessed immense struggle firsthand and have worked ceaselessly to carve out a bright future for both themselves and their city. Buttressed by the bass-heavy, space-age sounds of local production gurus Block Beattaz, G-Side are an inescapable force, a perfect mix of positivity and swagger preaching, as SPIN coined, "no-bullshit, no-excuses achievement." Raised ablock apart from one another in impoverished Athens, the duo started rapping together in 1999 inspired by the gangsta stylings of UGK, the fierce originality of Dungeon Family, and the independent spirit of No Limit. The name came easily—they hailed from the gutter side of town—and their chemistry was instant: ST with his laidback lyrical delivery and Clova with his straight-ahead iciness.

DaVinci
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 9:20pm - 9:40pm @ Lustre Pearl (97 Rainey St. Austin, Austin, TX 78701)

Expect no gimmicks from San Francisco-bred emcee, DaVinci. Though his upbringing in the historic Fillmore District is a far cry from its jazz heyday, he represents a new generation of post-Reaganomic crack-era rap, whose often-unwitting participants had to hustle to survive past their adolescence. “My music has everything to do with my environment: from robbing, killing, pimpin’ to selling and abusing drugs...to family, gentrification, and shit, just havin’ fun,” he explains about his heavy content. “It’s a direct reflection of what my friends and family have been through and are still going through.”

Wavves
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 11:35pm - 12:00am @ Lustre Pearl (97 Rainey St. Austin, Austin, TX 78701)

L.A.'s Wavves follow up their 2010 skuzz-pop masterstroke King of the Beach with Life Sux, the debut release from singer Nathan Williams' Ghost Ramp label. If the band's previous records were all about one man's self-loathing, this six-song EP takes that sentiment and generously expands it outward, telling the tale of two loathsome characters locked down in Bummertown. What follows is a downward spiral of wrecked cars, impossible dreams and fading faith set to pop-damaged punk and squalling grunge, and featuring collaborations with musical BFFs Best Coast and Fucked Up. Also, it's fucking fun, though in Williams' words, "If you hate yourself and other people, you might like our record." Williams has come a long way from his parents' San Diego pool house, where Wavves was born during a jobless bout in 2008. A series of small-run 7-inches and tapes paved the way to the buzz-building self- titled and semi-self-titled LPs Wavves (Woodsist, 2008) and Wavvves (Fat Possum, 2009). Both were praised for their inimitable brand of experimental surf skronk and lo-fi loser anthems, notably swathed in pot smoke and isolation. King of the Beach, recorded in Mississippi with producer Dennis Herring (Animal Collective, Modest Mouse), kept that blessed spirit alive but displayed a set of fuzzed up, fleshed out confections, and found Wavves expanded to a ripping trio, including current bassist Stephen Pope.
Produced by the band and recorded at Infrasonic Sound in nearby Alhambra, Life Sux picks up where the last
album left off: at that rare intersection where form meets friction. Opener "Bug" is an upbeat bomb lobbed at
any enemies of fun-a thesis statement driven by Dino Jr. guitars and a pop-punk bass line. The blisteringly bright "I Wanna Meet Dave Grohl" offers an arena-sized appeal to everyman excellence, while "Nodding Off" finds
that escape fantasy failing even as Best Coast's Bethany Cosentino coos sweetly over the encroaching grime.
"Poor Lenore" is heavier and darker, awash in wasteland riffage àla Nirvana, and "Destroy" is severe, with
Fucked Up and Wavves teaming up to thrash in vain against a crushing apathy. Life Sux closes with "In the Sand," a longtime touring favorite recorded live at Black Iris Music in L.A. with drummer Jacob Cooper. Surfy, smashy and brash, the song is a fitting finale and despite itself, offers up a near
moral before careening into silence. After establishing his ennui, Williams offers up faintly glimmering hope in
the midst of inertia: "Do what you wanted to do / It's all up to you." Fittingly, the launch of Ghost Ramp embodies this slacker-made-good philosophy. Working with other people's labels was a means to an end. Finished with the red tape, false promises and general bogusness, Wavves is now a movement unto itself, going direct to fans and friends everywhere.

Trash Talk
    Thursday March 15, 2012 12:15am - 12:35am @ Lustre Pearl (97 Rainey St. Austin, Austin, TX 78701)
Forwards ever, backwards never. In a perfect world, those four words would tell you everything you need to know about Sacramento thrash-punk juggernaut Trash Talk. But in a perfect world, these four furious scions of guitar-wrought destruction wouldn't exist. Lee, Garrett, Spencer and Sam are fueled by our ugly, and they give it back in spades. The Trash Talk live grind is a notorious thing -- an anarchic, energetic and often painful paean to otherwise oppressed angst that's unsurprisingly found footing all over the world, from the U.S. to Europe, to Australia and Japan. And in between that nearly ceaseless touring, the band's matched its on-the-road fervor with an impressive collection of recorded brutality, from 2009's "East of Eden" single featuring vocals from hardcore icon Keith Morris (Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Off!), to last year's ragged full-length masterpiece Eyes & Nines, to their recent split 7-inch with Wavves.

On their recently released 7-inch EP for True Panther Sounds, Trash Talk continue to bodily propel their sound down the gnarled, grime-swathed path they've hewn for themselves. The aptly named opener "Awake" careens through the gate in a hail of shred. "Slander" squeals, stacks, smashes and releases in one minute flat, while "Blind Evolution" seems epic at over two, progressing from rapid thrash to a grungy, halftime sludge. Then, in comes "Burn Alive," tailor-made to elicit air punches (be aware of your surroundings when you drop the needle), with its screeched out anti-wisdom: "The good die young, but the great survive." Finally, "Gimme Shelter" brings things to a punishing, pummeling close and it all happens so quickly, so feverishly that the listener's left beaten, bruised and ears bleeding with no real sense of what just happened. Which is, of course, how Trash Talk likes it. Forwards ever, backwards never.

Exitmusic
    Friday March 16, 2012 9:00pm - 9:40pm @ Lustre Pearl (97 Rainey St. Austin, Austin, TX 78701)
Sometimes, listening to Exitmusic, it's hard to tell exactly whether the goosebumps you're getting are from the parts that are chillingly beautiful and melodic or the ones that are aching and guttural. Or further, the ones that are creepily sparse and disembodied. The New York City duo -- Aleksa Palladino and Devon Church -- doesn't care when the chill runs down your spine, they just hope their music provokes some kind of primal feeling. Church explains, "It's like what Aleksa sings at the end of 'The Sea': 'And you turn your back to life... Oh, sorrow.' We want our music to confront people in a gentle but powerful way, to make them feel something."

    Saturday March 17, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ Lustre Pearl (97 Rainey St. Austin, Austin, TX 78701)

A Kentucky native now based in Brooklyn, singer-songwriter Dawn Landes released her third album "Sweetheart Rodeo" in 2010 on Cooking Vinyl Records. Uncut Magazine called her "one of the finest voices in modern Americana". Touring with guitarist John Kaufman and drummer Ray Rizzo, Dawn and her band have opened for Midlake, Suzanne Vega, Elvis Perkins and Okkervil River in Europe and the states. Dawn has collaborated with Justin Townes Earle, Alexi Murdoch and Hem in the studio. Her songs are often featured in film and TV (Bored to Death, Gossip Girl, Californication, Savage Grace). Dawn will be playing songs from her forthcoming record, slated for release early 2013.

Jonny Corndawg
    Sunday March 18, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ Lustre Pearl (97 Rainey St. Austin, Austin, TX 78701)

Jonny Corndawg is an infectious songwriter and burgeoning country star that worships the altar of Waylon Jennings, Billy Joe Shaver, and Michael Hurley. Born in Montana, raised in rural Virginia and now residing in Brooklyn, New York, Jonny Corndawg has been touring on his motorcycle since he dropped out of school in 2001. Since then he has played shows in every U.S. state, Canada, eleven European countries, Australia, Argentina and India. But you won't find him on CMT. His music is more in the vein of that obscure '70s gay country that housewives would discover on a Bear Family reissue in twenty years. This leatherworking, airbrushing, marathon-running cowboy troubadour combines his musical influence with the lyrical whimsy of Shel Silverstein to create songs that are nearly impossible to resist. In the past year he has toured and performed alongside such artists as Deer Tick, Dawes, Middle Brother, Michael Hurley, J. Roddy Walston & the Business, The Whigs, Futurebirds, Wanda Jackson, David Allan Coe and Gene Ween.
