Octant
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 11:00pm - 11:40pm @ The Velveeta Room (521 E 6th St)

The latest OCTANT LP contains music performed by hand-built digitally controlled and solenoid actuated instruments. Steam, bellows, and clockwork would seem to be appropriate tools for the ghostly powers directing this orchestra of homemade acoustic automata. Brooklyn-based songwriter and tinkerer Matthew Steinke created these devices to accompany himself in a musical menagerie he has dubbed Octant. Menacing clouds of reverberating discord give way to toy piano chimes synchronized with chirping melodica, booming bass drum, and mournfully wheezing harmonium, all oddly juxtaposed with Steinke's warm guitar melodies. The songs lurch like a haunted Model T from childlike singsong to dense mechanized arrangements, from triumphal player-piano chaos to spare, melancholy chamber pop. Fractured and familiar, as full of nostalgic yearning and doomed hope as a Ouija-board encounter with a beloved departed grandparent, these unresolved gems suggest the sweet suffocation of an abandoned pawn shop crammed with all the relics that make up our shared musical imagination.

New Moods
    Thursday March 15, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ The Velveeta Room (521 E 6th St)

The seeds of New Moods sprouted a couple years ago in small house on the outskirts of Bushwick. After hours of overhearing his housemate artist/vocalist Billy Jones (Other Passengers) feverishly writing and recording rough demos for a solo project, producer/engineer Sean Maffucci (Icewater Scandal) was quickly inspired to get involved. Having spent the better part of the last 4 years producing and engineering albums from his Junkyard studio, (Bear in Heaven, Gang Gang Dance , et al) Maffucci knew he wanted to contribute. With the help of his magical hands, he quickly laid down some beat and synth programming over an early version of the song “Dying/Trying.” Immediately upon first listen Jones and Maffucci knew they were on to something special – thus the birth of New Moods.

Paper Route
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ The Velveeta Room (521 E 6th St)

Here’s the situation. In Nashville, there’s an old, decrepit plantation house where three bedraggled but refined, white gentlemen drop beats, craft wordplay, design artwork, and arrange orchestral maneuvers in the dark. The structure is called Joy Mansion, and the men who dwell there staring each other down and exercising their creative rivalry for all it’s worth collaborate under the moniker of Paper Route. Having toured relentlessly with the likes of Passion Pit and mewithoutyou, won hearts and minds with their debut album Absence (2009), paid musical tribute to Lou Reed to the man’s imperturbable face at South by Southwest, and insinuated themselves into pop culture consciousness when their song, “The Music,” appeared in the film (500) Days of Summer, Paper Route have now seen fit to go for broke on the possibility that epic earnestness, lyrical depth, and poetic heft can all coincide within one ridiculously catchy song collection primarily preoccupied with—wait for it–tragedy, disappointment, and loss. Behold The Peace of Wild Things.

The Wilderness of Manitoba
    Thursday March 15, 2012 9:00pm - 9:40pm @ The Velveeta Room (521 E 6th St)

Reviewing a recent show in London, a UK music blog wrote that the Wilderness of Manitoba displayed "a natural, unique sound that proves the creativity of this modern folk outfit and the places they are leading the genre". In 2011, the Canadian band toured the U.S. four times, Canada once and performed in Germany and the UK. In the process, they became a more dynamic live band with their trademark four part harmonies and various multi-instrumentalists. To understand The Wilderness of Manitoba, you have to go to a music-filled house in Toronto, Canada where most of the band lived. The studio in the basement is where they recorded the majority of their current album, "When You Left The Fire", and the "barn" in the backyard is where they played their first live shows. The intimacy of the house and the band's emphasis on a vocals first approach has helped shape their timeless sound.

Dad Rocks!
    Thursday March 15, 2012 10:00pm - 10:40pm @ The Velveeta Room (521 E 6th St)

Icelandic musician Snævar Njáll Albertsson is the mastermind behind Dad Rocks!, the solo project of the singer who initially rose to prominence with the Danish band Mimas. Dad Rocks!, however, is quite different: the guitar here is mostly acoustic and is accompanied by piano, trumpets, violin, viola and much  more. As Dad Rocks!, Albertsson is inspired by acts such as Bill Callahan, Owen, Why?, Akron/Family and Do Make Say Think. This has led to a sound that is a unique mix of folk and pop with complex guitar-work and anthem-like arrangements. However, Snævar Njáll Albertsson’s primary sources of inspiration are the relations closest to him. Most of all his little daughter who also inspired the name Dad Rocks!, naturally a pun on the ’dad rock’ genre. The use of pathos and irony is something that is explored throughout his work. Lyrically, this is also a central aspect with subjects both big and small.

The Silent Comedy
    Friday March 16, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ The Velveeta Room (521 E 6th St)

In 2006 a loose collection of musicians began to evolve into a quartet of performers who turn heads for their wild live performance, genre-bending sound, and unique aesthetic. In 2008, the group recorded their eponymous debut studio EP with Brian Karscig (producer, and founding member of Lous XIV – Atlantic Records). In keeping with their DIY tradition, the band self- produced their follow up LP, Common Faults, in 2010. The resulting buzz from sold- out pressings of both records, and sold-out shows around California, have resulted in sharing the bill with such diverse performers as Mumford and Sons, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, The Black Keys, Common, MGMT, Cold War Kids, Flogging Molly and more. The band is on tour in support of their newest release, Cruelty & Clemency (mixed by Brian Malouf)

Mike MacRae
    Friday March 16, 2012 8:30pm - 8:40pm @ The Velveeta Room (521 E 6th St)

A native of St. Louis, Mike MacRae began performing at the legendary (read: “closed”) Houston Laff Stop in 1999 and soon developed his trademark style of blending obscure impressions into straight stand-up. Mike’s television debut was on Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend” in 2001 and he has since performed on “The Late Show with David Letterman”, NESN’s “Comedy All-Stars”, and was a cast member on the TBS sketch show “Frank TV”. In 2009, Mike was invited to perform on the Master’s Showcase at the Montreal “Just for Laughs” Comedy Festival. He has also lent his distinctive voice to numerous commercials, video games, cartoons, anime, and Adult Swim on the Cartoon Network.

Matt Fulchiron
    Friday March 16, 2012 8:55pm - 9:15pm @ The Velveeta Room (521 E 6th St)

Known to those in the know as “The Full Charge,” Matt Fulchiron hardly lives up to his nickname. Worn down by relationships, adult responsibilities, and limited resources, Fulchiron coasts through his life and his act with a sarcastic and defeated outlook.
Matt is a regular at many clubs including The Comedy Store, The Improv, and The Comedy and Magic Club. He has also performed stand up on the television shows “Comedy Central Presents,” “Live at Gotham,” “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,” “Last Comic Standing,” “Tosh.0,” and “Comics Unleashed.” He’s appeared on The Bob and Tom Radio show, and was the opening act on Daniel Tosh’s “Tosh Tour Twenty Ten.” There’s nothing you can do about it.

Dan Soder
    Saturday March 17, 2012 9:30pm - 9:50pm @ The Velveeta Room (521 E 6th St)

Originally from Aurora, CO, Dan Soder started doing stand up at 21 while attending the University of Arizona. After two years of playing clubs and casinos all over the southwest, Dan decided he'd had enough of extreme heat and venomous animals, so he moved to New York to get serious about stand-up. After living in New York for close to 5 years, Dan has been featured on Comedy Central's "Live at Gotham", and also won Caroline's 'Final Four'. Most recently, Dan was the standout from the 2011 Montreal Just For Laughs Comedy Festival.

RYAN STOUT is a well-crafted and seasoned comedian who has performed all over the world. A regular guest on CHELSEA LATELY, Ryan has also appeared on CONAN, Comedy Central's LIVE AT GOTHAM, and his own half-hour special: COMEDY CENTRAL PRESENTS... RYAN STOUT. While still in college, Stout was already performing over 300 shows per year when, at age 22, he won the Boston International Comedy Festival's Stand-Up Comedy Competition. He went on to perform at HBO's "The Comedy Festival" in Las Vegas, HBO's "U.S. Comedy Arts Festival" in Aspen, and the prestigious "Just For Laughs" International Comedy Festival in Montreal. Within six months of moving to Los Angeles, he booked his first pilot, hosting a game show for MTV. That project established him as a go-to host for any occasion and over the next few years MTV booked Ryan to host nearly _50_ pilots, specials, and episodes of random television. He even hosted the iconic MTV Spring Break. In December 2011, his debut comedy album, "Touché," was released by Comedy Central Records and reached #7 on the iTunes comedy charts. Currently, Ryan Stout is patiently waiting to hear if his latest pilot for CBS will be picked up for series.

Mike Lawrence is a comedian born and raised in South Florida. He began doing comedy as a way to escape the dullness of his job at the McDonald's Drive-Thru, and quickly fell in love with it. He moved to New York in 2007, where he could write about all of his miserable life experiences from a safe distance. He has since performed at the New York Comic-Con (A dream come true), was nominated for the Emerging Comic Award at the 2009 ECNY Awards, and was featured in Time Out New York. He was one of the "New Faces" at the 2010 Montreal Just For Laughs Comedy Festival. He most recently made his television debut on John Oliver's New York Stand up Show on Comedy Central.
