Saint Motel
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ Treasure Island (416 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78701)

With sophisticated savvy and singularity, the Los Angeles quartet Saint Motel has built a formidable reputation on the back of inventive indie pop and wildly fun live shows. Mixing blistering pep with unique flair and rousing rhythms, Saint Motel's aural catharsis is pure bliss with a twist of cynical humor. Once pulled in by the pulsating and joyous melodies, delight can be found in the surprisingly avant-garde lyrical subject matter. Stories reveal themselves through thematic twists and turns with a narrative voice both subversive and sincere. We find our contemporary hero assessing the world through a lens of poetic contrasts -- running down the line of his modern concerns and realizing that a mangled face can be beautiful, that honest feedback can be as lethal as any weapon, and that one might be better off when he has nothing at all. With such honest motifs strung together by tongue-in-cheek notions, delivered with such charm, the band's intentions are often left open to interpretation. And so, what might be easily perceived as sexy with one listen, with another might seem mean-spirited or flatly perverse. That is the flair of Saint Motel's rapturous pop and the graceful dichotomy of its existence.

Main Attrakionz
    Thursday March 15, 2012 12:50am - 1:10am @ Treasure Island (416 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78701)

Hailing from North Oakland, California, Squadda B and MondreM.A.N. of Main Attrakionz have been rapping together for most of their young lives. Early on, a shared love of rap music led them to put school on the back-burner and focus on producing music with a talented crew of local artists. Over the ensuing 7+ years, (and with an added assist from the world wide web and social media) Main Attrakionz have cultivated a unique and passionate sound, combining opaque atmospherics and lived-in reality rhymes, that stands as one of the most interesting and refreshing in the crowded and fractured world of today’s rap underground.

Hurray for the Riff Raff
    Thursday March 15, 2012 11:00pm - 11:40pm @ Treasure Island (416 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78701)
Influenced by the sounds of Classic Country, 1960's Rock 'n' Roll, and master songwriters like Townes Van Zandt and Neil Young, Hurray for the Riff Raff has deep roots in the landscape of America. Alynda Lee Segarra, a 24 year old Puerto Rican from the Bronx is the creative force behind the band. At the young age of 17 she traveled the USA and eventually settled in New Orleans, forming Hurray for the Riff Raff. Rollingstone.com called their 2007 self-released debut album It Don't Mean I Don't Love You "Sweet, tender folk music built from brittle banjos and boasting lovely, loping melodies." Their second album, 2010's Young Blood Blues was released by eMusic Selects (Best Coast, Crystal Castles). Bruce Warren of WXPN and NPR's World Cafe said of Young Blood Blues, "The band has released an album of great songs that will re-define any concept about folk or alternative-country”.

    Friday March 16, 2012 10:15pm - 10:50pm @ Treasure Island (416 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78701)
Inspired by a taste for the surreal, Cleveland's Mr. Gnome has been creating a singular amalgam of gritty, space-psychedelia since 2005, gaining them an ever-growing cult following across North America and Europe, as well as praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, Paste, Spin, Bust, and more. With a nod to the off-kiltered, the constantly touring duo are set to release their third full-length album, Madness In Miniature, October 25th on El Marko Records. While the previous two albums offered mere glimpses, the new album is an all-encompassing gaze into two delicate yet roaring, hypnotic yet beautifully disconcerting minds that come together to make sense as one.

Yuppie Pricks
    Saturday March 17, 2012 10:00pm - 10:40pm @ Treasure Island (416 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78701)

Former clean cut, vest-wearing honchos from Alternative Tentacles, these Austin punk ramblers stab out an approach that is more like the Fleshies than their fellow citizens Complete Control, producing rambunctious hybrids like “G.O.P.” which actually sounds like Jello Biafra singing for the late period Buzzcocks (actually the tune hijacks the ‘Cocks’ “E.S.P.”). To keep things grounded in blatant localism and Texas fun punk pride, they also unhook a hell raising, big guitar swagger version of the Big Boy’s “Frat Cars,” just to expose their relished roots. “Male Models” strikes a match that burns like Southern California punk, sing-along slobbers and all, though it’s actually a butch version of the Undertones song (and not the Sleater Kinney song of the same name!). Their own swan song of pride and punctiliousness, “Loser,” unloads lines about guys pumping gas, empty pockets too big and blank to pay for cocaine, while the yuppies like the band fill the nation with a portfolio of white lies of proper world order. The irony drips like bacon fat, even flooding back into the song “Greed is Good,” which reads like a rampant and raging treatise by Adam Smith, cataloging how we should “squeeze every dollar from ever deal,” squeeze the hell outta lemons for lemonade, and avoid the wasted work of lunch time. “Prick4Life” could even make a fan of the Supersuckers bang their dirty hair across the floor in Budweiser bellows. Lastly, note how they really churn the machismo sex sauce and steal the swagger from the Black Crowes on the album cover. Get your Izod collars up and prepare the naked girl sushi, the time is ripe for raking in the fortune!
