Last we heard of Sean Bones he was riding a triple wave with RINGS, his oddball reggae debut, an acclaimed feature film Wah Do Dem and still shipping orders of swim trunks for his S/S Friends line. The three projects were born out of an intense musical connection. If it was unclear to anyone that Bones is an intriguing and adventurous record-maker then it won’t be much longer.
Shortly after being invited to open for Spoon at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn (the last show supporting RINGS), Sean decamped to Treefort Studios with Shane Stoneback to start creating an album he’s calling Buzzards Boy. The songs are a departure from the debut (less Jamaica here) but he’s still after something warm and broken in. The island he’s trawling is darker and more beautiful - tracks are swathed in reverby surf guitars and loose percussion. It’s easy to imagine hearing these songs outdoors, at night. (And considering who we’re dealing with, sunglasses would be fine in that moonlight.)
While plans are afoot for a 7” release later in the fall, Sean is playing out both with his evolving band and alone with a boombox. The solo shows have been happening more and more lately and they are loose and engaging sights to behold. As always, he’s giving us options and they are all uniquely Bones.
