Austin, Texas: home to a diverse landscape of coworking spaces, the Global Coworking Unconference Conference (GCUC), and the Coworking Space Ship’s first stop on its North American tour. It starts with a treasure hunt roving all across Austin, and ends with a party at Conjunctured coworking space.
9am-5pm: The Coworking Treasure Hunt
We have prepared a self-guided tour for you in the form of a Treasure Hunt as a part of day two of the GCUC. Follow our map and visit as many of the coworking spaces in the Austin area that you can to collect the coworking clues, for a chance to win 3 one-month tickets (up to €250/US$330 each) to any coworking space or spaces in the world, and other prizes.
The Coworking Treasure Hunt will lead your exploration of the diverse landscape of coworking in Austin.
As Austin is large and the terrain tough, it may be advisable to make a friend, team-up, rent a car, take a bus, divide the task, or simply run!
So far nine spaces are on the map: Conjunctured, CoSpace, GoLab Austin, HubAustin Coworking, Link Coworking, Perch Coworking, Soma Vida, Space 12 and Tech Ranch.
On Friday 9 March they will be ready for all visitors with smiles, information, mini-tours, and of course the ever important clues. Maps and further information coming soon.
The winners will be announced at the closing party.
6pm-11pm: The GCUC Coworking Closing Party
All conference participants are invited to Conjunctured for a final evening of information, mixing, mingling, connecting, live music, and cheers over some locally brewed beers – on Deskwanted & Deskmag of course. The party is free and open to everyone – half of the tickets are reserved for GCUC participants, but also all local coworkers and people who are interested in coworking can take part in for free.
So, you may be asking yourself, what is a mini TOC? Well, for one - it's small. The attendance for Mini TOCs are limited - at Mini TOC Austin, we'll have a maximum crowd of 200 smart, engaging bookish, techy people.
And small is good. While the focus at mini TOC is on the intersection of technology and publishing -- just like at the "big" TOCs, at Mini TOCs, the crowd is small, the atmosphere is intimate and informal, and all the emphasis is on attendees and presenters sharing the conversations.
At Mini TOC Austin, the presentations are just the jumping off point for discussions that involve everyone in attendance. We mix up the format so there will be some "thinky" idea-oriented sessions where presenters will lead discussions post-preso -- and some "do-y" technical Q+As, where attendees can ask the experts about things like digital conversion, layout and UX. It's FOO Camp meets BookCamp, meets unconference, meets TOC, meets (sorta kinda) MakerFaire.

Most startup entrepreneurs, investors and incubators will tell you that two founders are better than one. What they won't tell you is two founders are more likely to try to kill each other - or at least kill their startup. Co-founder disasters are a bit of an industry taboo. We never hear about most of them. Many great entrepreneurs have had to sacrifice a beloved startup to learn valuable life lessons about working with partners. This panel brings together four entrepreneurs who lost their prior startups to infighting but survived to tell their tales in the hope that you can avoid some of their mistakes.

The Lean Startup debuted at #2 on the New York Times bestseller list. This talk draws on stories and insights from the book, explaining the new science of entrepreneurship. Most startups fail. But many of those failures are preventable. The Lean Startup is a new approach being adopted across the globe, changing the way companies are built and new products are launched. Eric Ries defines a startup as an organization dedicated to creating something new under conditions of extreme uncertainty. This is just as true for one person in a garage or a group of seasoned professionals in a Fortune 500 boardroom. What they have in common is a mission to penetrate that fog of uncertainty to discover a successful path to a sustainable business. The Lean Startup approach fosters companies that are both more capital efficient and that leverage human creativity more effectively. Inspired by lessons from lean manufacturing, it relies on “validated learning,” rapid scientific experimentation, as well as a number of counterintuitive practices that shorten product development cycles, measure actual progress without resorting to vanity metrics, and learn what customers really want. It enables a company to shift directions with agility, altering plans inch by inch, minute by minute.

With the twenty-first century comes a new breed of artist: the indie game designer. These innovators design and program their distinctly personal games in the hope that they may find connection and success. After years of work, designer Edmund McMillen and programmer Tommy Refenes work toward the release of their first major game for Xbox, Super Meat Boy. At a big video-game expo, developer Phil Fish unveils his highly anticipated, FEZ. Designer Jonathan Blow considers a new game after his very successful game, Braid. Four developers, three games, one ultimate goal— to express oneself through a video game.
