Will Sexton
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 9:00pm - 9:40pm @ 18th Floor at Hilton Garden Inn (500 N IH 35)

Will Sexton, whose writing credits range from work with Waylon Jennings and Stephen Stills to Joe Ely and Bill Carter, is shaped by the unique diversity of the Austin music scene. Fate and his own sheer talent placed him on stage with local legends before he’d lived out his first decade. Will and his big brother, Charlie, started playing together at the Continental Club when Will was 9 and Charlie was 11. Many of the sounds of his childhood still resonate in his current work. Will received early success in Austin and was signed by MCA at age 16. He has survived in the tough Austin music scene by playing gigs with a variety of notable artists. It is never unusual to go out to catch a show featuring an Austin singer/songwriter and see Will onstage.

Capybara
    Thursday March 15, 2012 9:00pm - 9:40pm @ 18th Floor at Hilton Garden Inn (500 N IH 35)

Capybara is bent on making authentic music in spite of the odds. In early 2009, four lifelong friends slipped away from jobs and leases in Portland, Brooklyn, and Kansas City to form a band in a frozen pueblo in Taos, New Mexico. The result was Try Brother, the group’s delicate, introspective debut that initiated a flood of opportunity: signing to The Record Machine, a nod on Spike Jonze’s official mixtape for Where the Wild Things Are, an invitation to compose the feature-length soundtrack for Sundance 2010 pick One Too Many Mornings, and the honor of backing legendary cult songwriter Daniel Johnston at the inaugural Middle of the Map festival in Kansas City. With a litany of accomplishments behind them and their eyes (and hearts) set on the future, Capybara is bringing its lush creative process to new heights.

Monarchs
    Thursday March 15, 2012 10:00pm - 10:40pm @ 18th Floor at Hilton Garden Inn (500 N IH 35)

Music comes not from lesson or rote but the open soul. Celeste Griffin, Monarchs' lead singer, began her music education in the piano at age eight. It lasted less than a year. With little to no formal training, it was on a sultry Birmingham, Alabama day in June, 2007 when Celeste again laid hands on her mother’s old piano and stumbled upon her first song, Notes of Disease. The pot began to boil and Celeste yielded to the flame. Three years later Griffin’s recognized ability to whisper southern family secrets and belt the grief of lost love has landed her at the biggest venues in Austin, the “Live Music Capital of the World.”

Doe Paoro
    Friday March 16, 2012 8:25pm - 9:00pm @ 18th Floor at Hilton Garden Inn (500 N IH 35)

Brooklyn-based artist Doe Paoro describes her music as “Ghost Soul," characterized by a dolorous, ethereal sound that evokes the resurrection of "a choir of ghosts who haven’t completely detached from the human experience.” Echoes of attachment and detachment permeate her debut album, Slow to Love, out February 14, 2012.

The album’s first single, “Can’t Leave You,” was co-produced by cellist Yuri Hart and Decibel Studios' Lasse Mårtén, who began collaborating with Paoro after he saw a YouTube video of her performing it on the piano. Paoro’s haunting vocals are strongly influenced by her in-depth study of Lhamo—a powerful, unusual, and vocally acrobatic Tibetan-style opera—that she encountered while traveling alone through the Himalayas this past year. At times she channels Coco Rosie, Lia Ices, and even Julianna Barwick.

During her travels, Paoro spent several weeks practicing silent meditation. The high-contrast nature of her music is directly influenced by these studies and experiences, as she was forced to reflect on the deep and expansive space between silence and sound. Upon returning to the U.S., Paoro sketched out Slow to Love while isolated in a cabin near her hometown of Syracuse, New York.

Paoro has been compared to Lykke Li, newcomer Lianne La Havas and James Blake, but her haunting vocals and spacious arrangements are singular, realized in a state of sorrow without bitterness, passion without pretense. To add cliché to an artist otherwise devoid, Doe Paoro is going to make a huge mark in music in 2012.

The Spring Standards
    Saturday March 17, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ 18th Floor at Hilton Garden Inn (500 N IH 35)

The Spring Standards are an energetic force of three-part harmony circling over a rock n' roll sound with an old country aftertaste. From small towns to big cities, they explode on stage with spirit, spontaneity, and a style all their own. They are, in no particular order: James Cleare, James Smith and Heather Robb. Each member of the band is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, and they use their strengths as a trio to create a sound that listeners might expect from a band twice their size. With an emphasis on three-part harmony and a variety of instrumental switching, their range and energy make each live show a unique event. Paste Magazine chimes, "It's no easy task to find a country/folk haystack buried amongst noisy New York needles, but this winsome three piece rewards the hunter." The band’s debut full-length album Would Things Be Different, produced by Bryce Goggin, was released last year and they have recently finished recording a double-EP to be released in Spring of 2012.

Wooden Finger
    Saturday March 17, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ 18th Floor at Hilton Garden Inn (500 N IH 35)

Jackson, MS based, Wooden Finger began as a collaboration between Matthew Magee and Allison Jenkins.  Their diverse musical backgrounds resulted in 2006 debut LP All This Time...Still We're Lost, which was a haunting blend of atmospheric folk rock and cinematic baroque pop.  They are now releasing their much anticipated sophomore recording, Take and See and Do What You Want, which has a distinctly more rhythmic direction.  Magee and Jenkins are now joined by Ryan Baucum (bass), Chip Burr (drums) and Jason Daniel (guitar) which has resulted in a much more driving, uplifting, and energetic pop feel.  They plan to tour extensively in support of this new recording.
