CFCF
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 7:30pm - 8:00pm @ Barbarella (611 Red River St)
CFCF, aka Michael Silver, has managed to build a world all his own since his debut LP ‘Continent’, an impressive collage of vintage electronic textures evoking grandiose landscapes worthy of a Michael Mann film. ‘The River’, an EP based partly on Werner Herzog’s classic film Fitzcarraldo, deepened a growing obsession with conjuring far-away landscapes and voyages through a style which is at times melancholy, propulsive and ecstatic. Working in genres ranging from house and disco to ambient and new age to rap and R&B, and pulling influences from Peter Gabriel and Popol Vuh to Mr. Fingers and DJ Screw, CFCF’s music is at once versatile and far-reaching yet eminently listenable and recognizably pop, and always vivid.

Sleep ∞ Over
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 9:35pm - 10:10pm @ Barbarella (611 Red River St)
Sleep ∞ Over was formed in early 2010 in Austin TX. With a few rough demos recorded live on a handheld tape recorder, the band (consisting at the time of Stefanie Franciotti and former members Christa Palazzolo and Sarah Brown) quickly attracted the attention of the esteemed Night People label who released the first Sleep ∞ Over EP on cassette. Although the tape came during a flood of hazy lo-fi releases, Sleep ∞ Over’s melodically-driven aesthetic rose to the top of the saturated genre. Boutique vinyl label Light Lodge also released a song from the Night People tape on a split 7” with fellow Austin band Pure X. In spring 2010, the band pulled their poignant melodies and classic pop song structures out of the murk and released a lush and expansive sounding group of songs on a 7” for Forest Family records which sold out in less than a week.

Pure X
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 11:15pm - 11:55pm @ Barbarella (611 Red River St)

Austin, Texas trio Pure X play languid, dreamy, noise pop that floats on a raft of thick, distorted guitar sounds, carried along by a current of simple but determined rhythms. The members of Pure X first met when they were attending college in San Marcos, Texas, not far from Austin. Bassist Jesse Jenkins and drummer Austin Youngblood were members of the band Silver Pines, while guitarist and vocalist Nate Grace played in a short-lived band with Jenkins and released a handful of solo projects on cassette. After spending some time traveling, Grace settled in Austin in 2009, and invited Jenkins and Youngblood to jam with him. These first informal get-togethers evolved into a band called Pure Ecstasy, but when the Texans learned there was a show band in California using the same name, they changed their handle to Pure X. (As Grace told journalist Amber Bravo, "I like Pure X. Pure "blank" is how I like to think of it.") Aligning themselves with the like-minded bands on Austin's Light Lodge Records label, Pure X began releasing a steady stream of 7" and cassette releases; their favored recording technique was to cut everything live to tape, with no overdubs and minimal editing. After receiving encouraging reviews for their initial releases and live shows, Pure X came to the attention of Acephale Records, who released the band's first full-length album, Pleasure, in the summer of 2011.

Nguzunguzu
    Thursday March 15, 2012 12:10am - 12:50am @ Barbarella (611 Red River St)
Nguzunguzu's (prounounced en-goo-zoo-en-goo-zoo) bubbling, otherworldly productions stitch percussively forward experimental sounds into a club-friendly framework. Alongside kindred spirits in the Fade To Mind crew (Kingdom, Total Freedom) Nguzunguzu seamlessly cross genres, tempos, and atmospheres to create a new emotive electronic club realm that immerses body and mind. It's something that has to be experienced to truly understand. Describing their own sound as "sad, sexy, scary", making you move isn't their only mission...they want to make you feel, maybe cry, and then dance the pain away.
Raised on 90s R&B/Hip-Hop radio and underground club music, the Los Angeles based duo (Asma Maroof and Daniel Pineda) revere contemporary, radio-friendly producers like The Dream or Bangladesh to be cutting edge as many of the current fringe electronic movements and trends. While they reference the explicitly experimental modern sounds of Footwork and House-inflected UK Bass, Nguzunguzu dig deep to compliment those sounds finding some of the freshest urban pop happening now domestically and globally, both obscure and mainstream.

Soft Metals
    Thursday March 15, 2012 10:15pm - 10:50pm @ Barbarella (611 Red River St)

Soft Metals is a multi-disciplinary electronic duo from Portland, Oregon now residing in Los Angeles, California. Its members Ian Hicks and Patricia Hall were brought together through a common love of 1970s and 80s synthesizer music and began writing and recording songs together in the spring of 2009. Inspiration came to them by way of experimental electronic sounds, film soundtracks, early industrial music, minimal synth, house, techno, synth pop, krautrock, psychedelic rock, and shoegaze. Ian and Patricia share songwriting duties and compose the music together before writing lyrics and adding vocals. Their songs are built from moody, improvised sessions together using exclusively electronic instruments. The meaning of the raw music they make is explored and interpreted afterwards with lyrical themes ranging from life experience, films, literature, history, science, love, conflict, and death. Soft Metals prefer to express themselves freely rather than adhere to a particular genre. This freedom gives them a diverse sound somewhere between dance music, austere synthetic pop, and experimental electronic composition. Their two best known songs, "The Cold World Melts" and "Psychic Driving" are demonstrations of this varied sound. "The Cold World Melts" is driving, assertive, and passionate. "Psychic Driving" is delicate, introverted, and vulnerable. Some of their songs remain in their unpolished improvised form to pay homage to authenticity, spontaneity, the joy of sound, and experimentation while others are studio based exercises, fusing new and old production technologies.

Neon Indian
    Friday March 16, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ Barbarella (611 Red River St)
Neon Indian is the brainchild of Alan Palomo, who's 2009 debut record Psychic Chasms not only earned the 20 year-old a spot on numerous year-end lists, but assisted the forming of a genre that, though known by a few names now (hypnagogic pop, glo-fi, chillwave), summoned a very unique and specific electro-mangled sound. Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and SPIN all praised Palomo for his adventurous new sound, and he was tapped to perform at top festivals like South by Southwest, Bonnaroo, and Sasquatch and also scored opening slots for bands ranging from Massive Attack and The Flaming Lips to Phoenix and Chromeo.

    BIO:
Brainfeeder's latest artist RYAT (pronounced "riot") is the brainchild of Christina Ryat, a producer, composer, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and sound manipulator who uses live electronics, instruments, pedals, and software to create avant compositional tunes. A recent LA transplant via Philadelphia, this versatile artist has a vast array of musical styles and prestige. Last year, commissioned by the Annenberg Foundation she composed a French influenced classical piece with traditional Indian dance. Followed with an extensive US electronic tour promoting her critically acclaimed avant big beat album Avant Gold. Avant Gold and RYAT's intense live show caught the eye of Flying Lotus who asked her to join the exclusive Brainfeeder roster. Ryat's latest LP TOTEM will be released MAY 2012 on BRAINFEEDER.

Lorn hails from the future of music as do his Brainfeeder & Ninja Tune contemporaries, however this young artist also forges a connection between the current exploding beat scene and its roots in the experimental scratch community born many years ago. Sharing his music online with other explorers of new software technology, Lorn cultivated a global following with his original scratch beats and traveled to play in the UK, Europe and Canada before ever releasing an album.
